It goes in where something is already there. Up to a certain point.

exacqVision is the Johnson Controls video software and its argument is always the same: it goes into installations that already exist, with cameras from many brands and many years, with analogue through an encoder and with the house's own equipment. That is true and it is useful. What needs telling is where it stops being true.

What it is, and what problem it solves.

The setting: a hospital, a municipal complex, a network of schools or a factory with fifteen years of layers on top.

Analogue in the old wing, three IP brands bought in different years, two recorders nobody knows who installed and cabling that partly holds up. Asking for «a new system» there almost always means changing everything, and changing everything is a project that does not get approved.

exacqVision goes after exactly that: a long device list, including models with years on them, analogue through an encoder, a server on Windows or on Linux and the house's own closed appliances for anyone who does not want to build anything. With that the project can be done in phases, building by building, instead of all at once.

And there is a second reason it turns up in a project, and it is not technical: it comes from the same house as an enterprise access control platform and as a classic intruder detection and access line. When you already have one of the two, the video from this house arrives with the integration already done and a single support contract.

How it is built.

A classic platform, on your servers, with two pieces that get left out of the quotation.

  • The server runs on Windows and also on Linux, and that second option is not a catalogue detail: for an IT department that already maintains Linux it means one licence less, less surface to patch and a machine that does not reboot on a Tuesday. For one that only knows Windows, it means the opposite, and then it goes on Windows.
  • It is sold as software on your own hardware or as the house's closed appliances, with tiers according to the number of cameras and the storage. The appliance route is shorter to commission and stiffer to extend; the software route is the opposite. You choose, and you choose at the start.
  • Each server records its own cameras, and above them sits a management layer for seeing many systems from one place: status, users, updates. That is the piece that gets left out of the quotation and the one that makes the difference when there are fourteen buildings — without it, fourteen systems are fourteen visits.
  • Recording to local drives, NAS or a storage array. Failover —another server picking up the cameras of the one that went down— is a function of the tier and not a tick box: if the project needs it, it may not be a matter of adding a licence but of changing tier, which is one of the nastiest price jumps and the one that gets discovered late most often.
  • Desktop, web and mobile clients. With the usual warning, which weighs here because many of these installations run across several sites on tight lines: the load is not set by the recording, it is set by how many people watch from outside at the same time, and that gets counted for two years from now and not for delivery week.
  • A programming interface and an SDK, plus the integrations with the house's own access control and intruder detection, which are the ones that arrive already done. With third parties you check the system, the version and who maintains the connector before quoting: «it is compatible» answers none of the three.

Living with what is inherited: where it stops being true.

First, what is actually true. And then the four places where the sentence breaks, which are the four that turn up in a real migration.

True: the device list reaches models that other platforms have already left behind, analogue comes in through an encoder, ONVIF covers the rest and a modest server does the work. That lets you go in without knocking anything down, and lets you do it in phases with each year's budget.

First limit, and it is absolute: old recordings do not migrate. Not here and not on any platform on this list, whatever the person selling it to you says. You leave the old system read-only until its retention runs out, or you export what is essential in a format that will open without its program two years from now. That coexistence costs space, licences and hours, and it goes into the quotation from day one.

Second: keeping the camera does not keep the image. An analogue camera through an encoder gives exactly the image it gave before: it does not read a number plate it could not read, nor a face. The encoder is a bridge so that camera stays in the system while it is being replaced, not an improvement — and it uses up its channel licence like any other.

Third: «supported» has degrees, and the brochure runs them together. ONVIF means it is seen and it is recorded. The camera's own functions —its analytics metadata, its preset positions, its second stream configured from the software— need a specific driver for that model and that firmware. And a camera that no longer gets firmware is a security problem on your network, whether the VMS sees it or not.

Fourth: inherited systems from other brands are looked at one by one. What equipment, what version, what functions travel and who maintains that connector. It is verified before the quotation, not after signing it, because it is the exact point where a quiet transition turns into an unbudgeted replacement.

And the uncomfortable conclusion, which is the part that makes this page useful: sometimes the honest answer after the inventory is that half the installation has to go. Saying it before signing is the difference between a transition and a surprise, and we say it even when it spoils the quotation — ours included.

The licence, and what arrives in year three.

Per channel, with tiers on top. The tiers are not cosmetic: that is where failover lives, and the layer that manages many systems, and some of the integrations. Choosing a tier is choosing a ceiling, and it is the most expensive decision in the whole project to undo.

On top of that goes the manufacturer's annual support contract, which is what gives you the right to new versions. And here is the invoice that surprises people three years later: letting it lapse switches nothing off —the system carries on recording and stays where it is—, but picking it up two years later is not always fixed by paying for the two years. The conditions for coming back are asked in writing BEFORE letting it lapse, not after.

And the effect of standing still in an installation like this one bites harder than in others: the cameras you buy three years from now need a driver that comes in new versions. In a fleet that is already mixed, not being able to add new models is not being able to carry on with the phased plan that justified the purchase.

Outside the licence sits what really grows: the storage, the encoders for the analogue —which are paid for per channel and get forgotten on the first page— and the operating system the server lives on.

Who it fits, and who it does not.

It has the clearest customer profile of these six, and that makes the conversation easy in both directions.

It fits if…

You have a fleet built up in layers that is not going to be thrown away and a budget that forces you to go in phases. If you already have access control or intruder detection from this house. If your IT prefers Linux, or prefers a closed appliance that nobody has to build. And if there are many buildings and they need to be watched and updated from one place.

It does not fit if…

It is a new installation that wants strong analytics out of the box: there the best argument this platform has does not apply. If you need a large catalogue of third-party integrations, or federation with certified procedures. Or if what you expect is that the old recordings will appear in the new system, because that is not going to happen with any of them.

The check that never gets skipped

If the project rests on integrating equipment or cameras that are already installed, that is verified before the quotation with the model and the version in front of you. It is half a day's work and it is the only thing that separates a phased plan from a full replacement discovered in month three.

What we do.

On this platform half the value comes before anything is installed: in the inventory, and in telling the truth about what gets kept.

  • The real inventory, unit by unit and camera by camera, with model, firmware and condition. Without that you cannot say what gets integrated and what gets replaced, and in an installation with years on it that inventory is half the project and half the budget.
  • The integration check before quoting: what can be seen from the new client, with what limitations and what has to be replaced, with its price, even when it spoils the quotation. And the phased plan building by building, with what survives each phase written down.
  • The sizing: cameras per server, drive space for the agreed retention at the real resolution and the real frame rate, and —the part almost nobody counts— how many people are going to watch from outside two years from now. With the calculation handed over, not the total.
  • The choice of tier and of route —software on your own hardware or a closed appliance, Windows or Linux— justified in writing against a three-year horizon, because it is the decision that sets the ceiling.
  • The migration, which is where everything goes wrong: living alongside the old system in read-only while its retention runs out, exporting whatever has to be kept in an open format, and the cost of those weeks in the quotation and not in an awkward conversation in May.
  • The integrations with access control and intruder detection, tested by triggering the event on the real system and not in the manufacturer's demonstration. And the acceptance tests written before anything is built: switch a server off, fill a drive on purpose, open the real number of remote connections planned and measure.
  • And the maintenance with a calendar, with the date of the manufacturer's support contract inside it: that is the one that gets left to lapse without anyone noticing, and here letting it lapse is expensive. Plus documentation: a live inventory, which server records what, a map of licences and tiers, the retention calculation and the administrator credentials in your name.

Who operates it afterwards.

Here the split depends on a decision taken at the start, and it is worth knowing that before you take it: on Linux or on Windows, and with a closed appliance or without one.

  • IT keeps servers, drives, backups, the video network, accounts and updates. If it was built on Linux, that demands an IT team that really maintains it —and if you have one, it is on home ground and it wins—. If it was built with the house's closed appliances, it is a good deal less work and a good deal less room to touch anything. Both are defensible decisions; the one that fails is the one taken without asking IT.
  • And IT keeps the task that, in an installation with many buildings, decides whether this ages well: using the central management layer to know what version each system is on. Without that, in three years there are fourteen different versions and nobody able to say which.
  • Security keeps users and permissions, which camera is seen by whom, recording rules and alarms, and above all the export. In a hospital or a school, who takes images out, with what authorisation and what gets logged is a data protection decision, and the person answerable for it has to be able to take it without asking IT for permission.
  • What is not left to day-to-day use: the retention, the recording quality and how the storage is shared out. Two tick boxes, consequences in terabytes.
  • The integrator is left with the camera drivers when a new model comes in, the version jumps, the growth of the storage and —the one most particular to this platform— the inherited equipment that has stayed inside. That ages, and when each piece gets retired is reviewed every year with a date. Plus the coordination with the access control side: same house, different products and different release calendars, and that is real work.
  • Training: half a day for the operator on their views and their exports; one day for whoever administers permissions and retention; and a technical session with IT on the server, central management and backups. All three with a written script for whoever joins next year, because someone will.

Analytics: what comes with it, what you add and where the ceiling is.

This platform is not bought for its analytics, and in an inherited fleet that has a consequence worth seeing before the demonstration.

Out of the box there is motion detection by zones and the collection of the events the cameras generate on their own, plus search over what has been recorded, and bookmarks. It handles the day to day: finding the moment when something changed.

And the consequence of the inherited fleet: ten-year-old cameras carry nothing inside. So in an installation built in layers the analytics are not decided by the software, they are decided by which cameras you end up with — and that changes the camera budget, not the licence budget. It is a sum to do at the start, because it decides the order of the phases.

What you add to it: third-party analytics and number plates by integration, with a bigger warning than on the platforms that live on being open — the one you want may exist or may not, and that is checked before it goes into a quotation, not after.

The ceiling, with no going round it: these are rules about geometry and about classification. A zone, a line, a time. It covers most of what gets asked for and it is enough in many installations. What it does not reach is understanding the scene: that a situation is turning bad, that someone is doing something unsafe that does not consist of crossing a line.
