The software from the people who make the cameras. And it shows in everything.

WAVE is the video software from Hanwha Vision, the house behind Wisenet cameras. It goes in over an afternoon, finds the cameras on its own and makes use of what those cameras carry inside. What you have to understand before signing is what happens the day a camera from another brand arrives.

What it is, and what problem it solves.

The gap it fills: video properly managed across several industrial units or several buildings without setting up a department to maintain it.

There is a size of installation —sixty, a hundred and twenty, three hundred cameras across a handful of locations— for which big-project software is oversized on every side: a management server, a database, a user directory and weeks of commissioning that you pay for just the same and never use.

WAVE sits on the other side: one service per machine, a client that finds the server on its own, and several servers joined into a single system where the operator opens a camera without knowing which machine it is recorded on.

And there is a fact that explains why it behaves like this, which is no secret and is worth having: underneath sits the Network Optix platform, the same one sold as Nx Witness. Hanwha puts its own layer on top for its own cameras. What you gain is a mature, well-proven base; what you have to know is that comparing WAVE with Nx is not comparing two different architectures, it is comparing two commercial arrangements and two degrees of integration with the house's own cameras.

How it's built.

Six things that decide the sizing, and one of them decides the migration too.

  • There is no central server everything depends on: each server keeps the configuration and can serve the client, so if the one you use goes down you come in through another. That takes away the single point of failure other platforms solve with a cluster and its licence.
  • You grow by adding machines and merging systems: each site is built complete and then added in, sharing users, permissions and views. If one machine goes down, another picks up its cameras — with the drives and the capacity worked out beforehand for its own load and for somebody else's, which is the part that does not happen by itself.
  • Recording goes to local drives, an array or a NAS, with separate backup storage. And the setting that decides retention most is not the drive: it is recording the small stream all the time and the big one only when there is movement. It turns days into weeks, and the price is detail in the hours when nothing happened.
  • The archive stays tied to the server that wrote it. It gets discovered late and it has a very concrete consequence: you can move a camera to another machine, its history stays where it was. Merging three servers into one means keeping the old ones switched on or exporting, and that time gets budgeted.
  • Its cloud is the door, not the warehouse: it is there so you can come in from outside without opening ports and so a user can sign in with their account. The video stays on your drive. What does leave the house are the accounts and the connection data, which are personal data even though they are not video — and you can work with no cloud, with local users and a VPN, and then remote access is IT's job.
  • Access control and intruder detection are integrated, they do not come inside: the panel raises the alert, WAVE marks the video, opens it on the operator's screen and records at top quality. The limit is clear and has to be said — the card, the cardholder and the audit report go on living in the other platform. And there is a development kit and a programming interface, inherited from the base; which specific integration is supported on this brand is asked of the manufacturer in writing.

Everything from one brand: what you gain and what you lose.

Both things are true and neither is in the brochure in full. It is worth having them together before deciding the camera estate, because that decision is the one that rules.

What you gain, and it is real: the house's cameras carry the analytics inside and send the software what they have seen —what type of object, with what characteristics, the best frame— so the next day's search is done on that and not on pixels. That is not added on: it comes with the camera.

You also gain the boring part, the one that saves most hours two years in: the firmware, the passwords and the certificates of a hundred and fifty cameras of a single brand get managed in one afternoon. With four brands it is a project, and that is why in practice it does not get done.

And you gain one telephone. When a camera cannot be seen, there is no working out whose problem it is: camera and software answer in the same house, and on a fault at the boundary that is days.

What you lose starts the day a camera from another manufacturer arrives, and that happens more than gets planned for: a point that needs a lens this brand does not make, a thermal camera, a building bought with cameras already fitted. Over ONVIF it comes in, it is seen and it is recorded. What does not come in is what justified the purchase: its on-board analytics, its scene descriptions and half of its configuration from the software.

The result is a system with two classes of camera, and the operator notices — not because it works worse, but because the search finds things in half the installation. You can live with that, but it gets decided beforehand and is not discovered in the second year.

And how far third-party support really goes: the compatibility list is long and it says «it is seen and it is recorded». It does not say with what functions, or with what firmware, or who maintains that driver. That gets checked with the exact model on a test rig, before promising anything — and if it has not been checked, the honest answer is «I don't know yet».

The cameras from this house

The licence, and what lands in year three.

Per channel and perpetual: one licence per camera, bought once and it stays in the system. Adding twenty cameras is buying twenty, with no price steps, which is easy to budget and easy to explain to purchasing.

There is a route that changes the sums and it has to be looked at: some of the brand's recorders carry the software inside and come with channel licences included. How many, of what kind and with what limits depends on the exact model, so that gets asked for in writing and not assumed — it is the difference between two quotations that looked the same.

Software maintenance is renewed separately. Not renewing it switches nothing off: it leaves you on the version you had. The problem comes from another direction, and it is the same on every platform on this list: the cameras you buy in three years' time need a driver that comes in new versions. Standing still means being unable to buy modern cameras.

And as you grow, what has to be looked at is not the licence: it is the machine. Recording and watching are different loads. A server that records a hundred and twenty cameras without breaking sweat chokes with six operators opening sixteen-way views, and that is not fixed with drives.

Who it fits and who it doesn't.

The question that decides is not the size. It is whose cameras these are going to be in five years' time.

It fits if…

You are going to fit cameras of this brand and you want the search over what they have seen from day one. If you have several medium-sized sites and an IT team that already maintains servers. And if you value commissioning being an afternoon and not a project: on an installation of that size that is real money.

It doesn't fit if…

You have two hundred cameras of other brands that work and are not going to be changed: over ONVIF you pay for a platform and leave out what makes it interesting. If the specification asks for video and access control on the same platform with cardholder and audit report. Or if hundreds of sites have to be federated with certified procedures.

The case to think about twice

The mixed estate somebody has told it is «compatible with everything». It is, for seeing and recording, and that may be enough. What is not acceptable is discovering it when the operator asks why the search finds nothing in the new wing. The test rig with the real models is done beforehand, and it is half a day.

What we do.

Design, sizing, deployment, commissioning, migration and maintenance. Put like that it says nothing, so here it is in concrete decisions.

  • The sizing written down: how many servers, how much drive space and how many days of real retention with the configuration handed over —dual stream included—, not with the brochure's. The calculation is handed over, not the total, so it can be argued with.
  • The network before the software: video kept separate from the company's network, cabinets, power, backup power and where the traffic goes in the hour when everybody is watching.
  • The test rig with the cameras that are really there, of every brand there is, checking which functions arrive and which do not. It is the test that turns «it is compatible» into a list, and we do it even when it spoils our own quotation.
  • The deployment: one system per site and the merge afterwards, permissions by profile and not by person, and the failure recovery tested by switching a machine off in front of the client. A system sold as redundant that nobody has switched a server off on is not tested, it is configured.
  • The rules, which is where this stops being a recorder: what event opens what camera, who gets the alert at four in the morning and what gets recorded at top quality. With the access control or intruder detection integration tested by triggering the event on the real system.
  • The migration and the maintenance: living alongside the old system for a few weeks, exporting what has to be kept before switching it off, and after that drives, versions, fields of view, retention measured properly and an alert when a camera stops recording. A video system degrades in silence.

Who operates it afterwards.

It splits well between two teams. The split gets decided before handover: afterwards it decides itself, and it usually decides badly.

  • IT keeps the machines, the drives, the backups, the accounts, the updates and the camera network. It is a service on Windows or Linux, so anybody who already maintains servers learns nothing strange — and that is a real advantage for a department of two people.
  • And it keeps a task that here is theirs and on other platforms does not exist: managing the camera estate. Firmware, passwords and certificates of a single brand are a perfectly normal IT task, and if nobody takes it on the estate grows old on the factory password.
  • Security keeps the views, the bookmarks, the searches, the alarms and the exports. Who can take images out, with what authorisation and what gets logged is a data protection decision and a matter of judgement, not an IT one: in IT's hands it gets settled by whatever is easiest to configure.
  • What is not left to daily use: the retention and the recording quality. They are two boxes and they move terabytes, so that access is limited in writing and by name, not by custom.
  • It asks little of the installer and quite a lot on rules, on the API and on knowing which camera brings what. Building this is easy, and that is why there are WAVE installations that are an expensive recorder: what turns it into a system is in the part you do not see.
  • Training on two levels: half a day for whoever watches, searches and exports —and to know what to do when an image does not appear—, and a technical session with IT on architecture, backups and what to do when a server does not come back. Documentation: a diagram of the servers and which camera records on which, a table of what analytics each model brings, the retention calculation, the rules in plain language and the administrator passwords in the client's name.

Analytics: what it brings, what you add to it and where the ceiling is.

Here the analytics are not bought separately: they arrive inside the cameras. That has one big advantage and one very concrete limit.

What it brings: the house's cameras classify what they see and send that description alongside the video, so the software can search afterwards over what was recorded without analysing it again —a person, a vehicle, a colour, the best frame of each appearance—. There is no analytics server to size and no fee per analysed camera. It is the function that saves the most time and the one least used, because nobody taught it.

What you add to it: server-side analytics and third-party add-ons that come in through the metadata kit and land on the same timeline; number plates, counting, abandoned object. With the usual warning: every addition is another manufacturer, another licence and another version that has to line up.

The ceiling, and it is worth saying plainly because the demonstration is good: this answers «what is there» and «where else has this appeared». It does not answer «what is going on here». It finds a person in a red jacket; it does not understand that the person is forcing something open instead of using it. Asking it for that ends in rules that get more and more complicated until somebody switches them off on a Tuesday.

And it is time to say where we come from, because what follows is a recommendation with an interest behind it: in the same house there is IRIS Neural, the NVMS from Infinity Neural, the other company in the group. And the honest closing line: if what you need is to find somebody quickly in yesterday's video, your cameras and the software that comes with them already do that. Then WAVE is enough, there is nothing else to buy, and we say so.

What brand are your cameras going to be?

It is the question that decides whether this platform fits you, and almost nobody has the exact answer for what is already fitted.
