What is really asked of you to come in as a technician?
That you like understanding how things work and not just that they work — here that shows within a week. That you do not mind saying you do not know something and keep digging until you find out. And that you care the job is properly finished even when nobody is going to look at it.
Then there is a part that is not asked for up front because it is learned, but it helps to want it: looking at an installation and seeing what is going to fail in two years' time. And another that surprises a lot of people: being able to talk to a client without hiding behind the jargon, because half the trade is explaining why something cannot be done the way they asked for it.
What is penalised here is not getting it wrong or not knowing. It is saying «yes, that can be done» without having checked, which is where the expensive problems come from. A technician who stops a job because something does not add up is doing his work.
