Do you need a qualification to get in?
It depends on the job, and less than it looks. In the technical roles what you can do counts for more than the certificate that proves it: a vocational qualification in electrics, electronics, computing or telecommunications helps a lot and is the most common route, but it is not a closed door for somebody who comes from elsewhere with a trade.
In development and in data, what gets looked at is the code and the projects, wherever they come from. A problem you have solved or something you have learnt on your own is of more interest than a list of courses.
And there are things that are not qualifications and are requirements in practice: a driving licence in the field jobs, and whatever risk prevention training the particular work calls for, which is compulsory and without it you climb nowhere.
