How long does it take before somebody goes to an installation on their own?
As long as that person takes, and there is no date marked on a calendar. You start by shadowing, you carry on doing it with somebody beside you, and you go out on your own when you have seen enough. Nobody goes to a site on their own before having gone with somebody plenty of times.
It is slower than in other places and it goes against the grain of the trade. There are companies where after six months they change your job title so you do not leave and after two years you are in charge of something you still do not know how to do: it works for the payroll and it fails the day you have to answer for a real project, because the title arrived before the trade did.
What is built slowly lasts. A technician trained that way knows why things are done and not only how, and that is the difference between following a procedure and realising that the procedure is no good for this installation. That takes years and there is no shortcut.
