European, on your servers, and without tying you in.

Mirasys is Finnish video software that installs on your machines, records to your drives and is licensed per camera, once. It is not the biggest platform on this list and does not try to be: it is the one that answers well to a specification asking for a European manufacturer, images kept in house and no dependence on a subscription.

When the specification has already decided half of it.

There are projects where the choice does not start with functions. It starts with three conditions.

The three appear together more and more often: that the images do not leave your premises, that the manufacturer is European or at least that you can explain where the software comes from and who answers for it, and that the system does not depend on a subscription somebody could stop paying.

Mirasys answers all three without effort, because it is what it is: a Finnish company that makes video software to install on your own servers, with a per-channel licence bought once. There is no compulsory cloud, there is no proprietary camera and there is nothing that expires and switches the system off.

The problem it solves, for anyone who does not know it: having a large, well-governed installation —many cameras, several buildings, operators with different permissions, a long archive and exports that stand up as evidence— without buying one of the big platforms with everything they drag along. It is a working tool, not a catalogue.

And one fact that explains where it comes from: it has been on the market a long time and part of its history has been making the video other brands sold under their own logo. That leaves a concrete inheritance — it supports a great many cameras, the old ones included, and it is built for somebody from outside to adapt it.

How it is built.

Classic server architecture, with a separation you notice while working: administering and operating are two different tools.

  • There is one server that governs the configuration and, underneath it, the servers that record. That has a consequence for the project: that server needs protecting and backing up. Recording does not stop if you lose it, but administration does, and recovering a system without a copy of its configuration is a long afternoon.
  • Administration and operation are kept apart: the administrator adds cameras, users, profiles and storage from their tool; the operator works in theirs —Spotter— with their views, their maps and their exports. That lets you give plenty of use without giving away any configuration.
  • Scaling: you add recording servers according to cameras and retention, and the whole thing is still one system with a single login. For several buildings with their own network between them it is comfortable; for scattered sites with a poor connection, the cloud platforms on this list fit better, and that has to be said.
  • Recording and redundancy: drives or an array, a copy to a second storage of whatever has to be kept twice, and failover servers so recording carries on if a machine goes down. It is sizing, not a tick-box: it is calculated beforehand and tested by switching a machine off at handover.
  • Access from outside: a gateway for web and mobile, with the network separated and a VPN. Here there is no manufacturer service acting as the door, and that means two things at once — nothing leaves your installation unless you decide it does, and there is IT work somebody has to do.
  • SDK, integration and licence: there is a development kit and there are interfaces to integrate access control, intruder detection, till points or your own systems. The licence is per channel and bought once; the maintenance agreement —new versions and support— is renewed separately, and not renewing it switches nothing off: it leaves you where you were.

Where the video lives, and why here it is easy to explain.

This platform does not have the cloud conversation that five of the seven we write up have. It has another one, and it is shorter.

The recordings are on the drives of your servers and there is no external service they pass through. For the data protection file that means there is no international transfer to justify and no processor to audit on the video side, and in a public specification it means a whole box gets answered with no ifs and buts.

What does not go away, because it never goes away: who can see what, how long it is kept, how the staff are informed, how a piece of evidence is handed over and how you prove it has not been touched. That part is the same on every platform on this list, and it is where the files come apart.

And what you do have to take on is the work the supplier does on a managed platform: configuration backups, updates, drives that get replaced, watching that everything is still recording and remote access set up sensibly. Either you do it, we do it under a maintenance contract, or nobody does — and the third option is the usual one.

The licence, and what happens as you grow.

Per channel and perpetual: one licence per camera, bought once and it stays. There are product tiers according to the functions you need, so it is worth getting the tier right from the start. Software maintenance is the other line: it gives you the right to new versions and support, it is renewed and it goes into the quotation for year one and for year five.

A system that has gone six years without an update keeps recording and starts to be a problem on another front, which is the security of the software itself. And as you grow what you have to look at are the machines and the drives: the real retention calculation gets repeated every time new cameras come in or somebody raises the resolution of the ones already there.

Who it fits, and who it does not.

It has a very clear place, and outside that place there are better options. Saying so is part of the job.

It fits if…

The specification or the house policy asks for a European manufacturer, recording on your premises and a licence that does not expire. If there are a fair number of cameras in one or several buildings with their own network, real operators using the system and a mixed camera estate that has to be integrated. And if you want an orderly tool, with administration and operation kept apart, without paying for forty things you are never going to use.

It does not fit if…

You have many small, scattered sites with nobody technical: there a platform managed from the cloud is going to give you less work. Nor if the project needs the largest family of integrations on the market. And it is worth checking what support and what channel there are in your country before committing a large installation, because that shows on the day of the fault and not on the day of the demo.

Analytics: what comes with it, what you can add and where the ceiling is.

As standard it brings what you need in order to work: motion detection by zones, alerts by schedule and by state, physical inputs and outputs to connect to other equipment, search by time and by event, and a careful export — the function that gets used most and valued least until you have to hand a video to a court.

What you add to it: integrated third-party analytics —counting, line crossing, loitering, abandoned object, number plates— and whatever the good cameras bring, whose events land on the same timeline. The VMS governs the video and the analysis is chosen separately, instead of buying a closed package.

The ceiling of what is included, with no make-up on it: it is detection by geometric rules. Rectangles, lines, sizes and schedules. It works for a door that should not open at three in the morning and it does not work for knowing whether what is happening in an industrial unit with people working in it is a problem. If somebody sells the second thing with the first, the outcome is known: alerts nobody looks at a month after handover.

And the declaration that belongs here: in the same house there is IRIS Neural, the NVMS from Infinity Neural —the other company in the group, so it is our own product and we say so before recommending it—. In many installations they live together: the VMS governs cameras, recording and retention, and IRIS brings the understanding of the scene and decides what deserves a person's attention. With an open platform on your own servers that coexistence is one of the cleanest: both systems take the same streams inside the installation and nothing goes outside.

What we do.

A platform on your servers puts the work back where it was: the project, the calculation and the maintenance.

  • The sizing: how many recording servers, what drives, what array if one is needed, how many real days of retention with the configuration as handed over, and what happens to that number when next year's cameras come in.
  • The network before the software: video separated from the company network, bandwidth between buildings, cabinets, power and backup. In an installation with several buildings, the network decides half of the problems to come.
  • The rollout: servers, a copy of the configuration from day one, adding cameras of every brand there is, profiles by role, recording schedules and the failover servers tested by switching a machine off in front of you.
  • The operation, which here is designed: the views each role needs, the maps, which event opens which camera and who gets the alert at four in the morning. A well-sized system with badly thought-out views is used badly every single day. Plus the integrations with access control and intruder detection, tested in both directions.
  • The migration and the maintenance: running alongside the old system, exporting whatever has to be kept from the old archive, and after that controlled updates, drives, configuration backups, fields of view and measurement of the real retention. Measured, not estimated: they are two different numbers and the second is always more optimistic.

Who operates it after we leave.

The split is the classic one, and the separation between administering and operating that the platform brings helps a good deal in getting it right.

  • IT: servers, drives, backups —including the one of the system configuration, which is the one that gets forgotten—, updates, video network, accounts and remote access over VPN. It is your own infrastructure and it is administered like the rest of the house.
  • Security: the whole operation, which here really is a job in itself. Views, maps, search, bookmarks, exports and attending to the alerts. The operating tool does not let you touch the configuration, so this part can be handed over whole, and without fear, to whoever has to use it.
  • The nuance of this platform, and it counts in its favour: because administering and operating are separated, the split can be written down exactly as it is —IT administers, security operates—. In systems where everything is done from the same screen, that split is a promise; here it is a setting.
  • The border you have to decide all the same: the rules and the alerts. They are configured on the administration side and they are decided by whoever answers for the risk. You have to sit the two of them round the same table once a year, because the installation changes and the alerts stay as they were.
  • Of the integrator it demands the classic craft —sizing, network, storage, integration— and maintenance that really gets done, because there is no cloud supplier watching the state of your system. And knowing the platform: it is less common than the big ones, so whoever installs it has to have installed it before.
  • Training at two levels —operation and administration— and the usual documentation plus one thing particular to this platform: the recovery procedure for the configuration server, with its backup and its steps. Plus architecture, retention calculation, a sheet per camera, views and alerts in plain language, and the administrator passwords in your name.
