A lot of installation for little money. And one thing to say.

Pyronix is a British brand well established in retail and mid-sized installation, with hybrid panels, two-way radio and good outdoor product. And with an ownership fact that for some clients decides the purchase.

What it is and where you'll find it.

Pyronix is a British intruder detection manufacturer with a tidy range. On one side, a panel built to be fitted fast and to live mainly off wireless devices. On the other, the EURO family, hybrid, which grows by bus with expanders and reaches installations of respectable size mixing cabled and radio zones. And its own detectors, including dual-technology outdoor models.

You find it in retail, hospitality, offices, workshops, medium-sized warehouses, sports facilities and residents' associations: installations that need a fair amount of system on a modest budget and a fast deployment. And it stands out in one particular place, the outdoors that is cheap to solve: a weatherproof dual-technology detector, well positioned, turns a yard that went off every night into a zone that is no bother, and this house has product for that at a price that makes the project possible.

The ownership, which for some clients decides it.

It is a fact, not a judgement, and it is said up front.

Pyronix has been part of the Hikvision group for years. For most installations that changes nothing: the product is the same, it is developed in the United Kingdom and it works just as well as before.

For others it does change. There are public bodies, infrastructure operators and companies with internal policies or specification requirements restricting security equipment from certain manufacturers or origins, and that is checked before quoting. We say it up front for the same reason we say what we withdraw from: it is the kind of thing that, if it comes up in the approval meeting, brings down a whole project. Asking about it in the first meeting costs ten seconds.

How it's built.

The hybrid family is the classic architecture: a panel with its zones, a bus off which hang keypads and expanders, zones supervised with end-of-line resistors to tell alarm, tamper and cut apart, independent areas with their own arming and schedules, and a supervised power supply with calculated batteries.

The radio is two-way, which is the difference that matters against old radio: the panel asks each device, knows whether it is alive, with how much battery and with what signal, and the fob gets confirmation that the command has been carried out. That turns the batteries into a work list for the next visit instead of a surprise.

The detectors are a strong part of the whole: indoor infrared with different lenses and pet immunity, and dual-technology outdoor detectors with anti-masking that let you cover a yard without devoting a perimeter project to it. Outwards, transmission to the receiving centre over the network with mobile network backup and supervision, user and installer apps through the manufacturer's cloud service, and connection to video and access control in software where the piece exists or with contacts where it is enough for one thing to let the other know.

How it behaves with false alarms.

It brings what is needed: confirmation between zones before treating an alert as a confirmed intrusion, automatic exclusion of the zone that fires repeatedly, supervision by zone that separates alarm from tamper and from fault, entry times and routes by area, and a log that can be read remotely. Where it wins is outdoors, which is exactly where most false alarms happen.

And on that there is something to tell that you learn by fitting. Outdoors the good detector is not enough: you have to look at where it points. A detector aimed at the street sees the cars going past; aimed along the fence and not at it, it stops seeing the street and carries on seeing whoever climbs over. At the wrong height it sees cats; at the right one it does not. And aimed at a bush or a loose tarpaulin it goes off in the wind indefinitely, because the bush is not going to get tired.

The grade, and the alarm receiving centre.

The European standards classify alarm systems into security grades according to risk, and each grade demands things of the equipment, the cabling, the power supply, the tamper detection and the supervision of the transmission; on radio, also how often each device is checked and how interference is detected. It is set by the activity, very often by the insurance and sometimes by a specification. And the usual distinction: equipment certified for a grade is not an installation that meets that grade; the first is in a certificate with a date, the second is signed by whoever hands the project over. The receiving centre is a separate decision, with its own contract and its own regulations, and with the obligation to verify the alert before calling out the police: that is why verification is not an extra in the quotation, it is what turns an alert into a decision.

Who it fits, and who it doesn't.

It fits the mid-sized installation that needs a fair amount of system without a corporate head-office budget: retail, workshops, hospitality, offices, warehouses, residents' associations. It fits very well when there is outdoor space to cover and it has been going off. And it fits where cable and radio have to be mixed without complications.

It does not fit if there is a purchasing policy or a specification excluding its parent group: that is asked about in the first meeting and, if that is the case, something else is proposed without arguing. Nor in the large installation with a supervised ring bus, dozens of areas and managed multi-route transmission. And it does not fit if what you expect is for the low price to include a design: most of the bad installations we have audited were not from bad brands, they were from designs that never existed. A reasonably priced panel that is well designed performs better than a very expensive one badly positioned, and the other way round there is no way at all.

What we do with it.

  • The purchasing policy question, up front. If there is a specification or an internal rule affecting the manufacturer, it is settled before quoting.
  • The design with a visit at the hour the protection is for, and with particular care outdoors: where each detector points, at what height, along the fence and not at the street, and what bushes or tarpaulins have to be taken out of the way before blaming the equipment.
  • The commissioning setting the alarms off on purpose: every detector tested by walking in front of it —the outdoor ones too, walking as somebody climbing the fence would walk and as a dog would walk—, every contact opened, a lens covered, a battery removed, the main route cut and a call to the receiving centre. A certificate written beforehand and filled in as you go, with the time and the result for each element.
  • The maintenance with a battery calendar, a report per element, the log reviewed to catch noisy zones and a check on what is still isolated and why. And the keys and the account in the client's name.

Who runs it once we leave.

A good deal, and the app helps. With the split written down from the start.

The client runs the day-to-day: users and codes, who arms which area, part-arming, schedules, arming and disarming remotely, one-off isolation of a zone, reading the log and the state of batteries and signal. The permission levels let a shop manager add a sales assistant without touching the configuration, and that has to be set up on day one: when everybody uses the same code, the log says «user 1» disarmed and says nothing at all.

What needs the installer is the layer underneath: pairing devices, adding or removing expanders and zones, changing times, routes or the confirmation logic, redoing areas, adjusting the outdoor detectors, touching what is transmitted to the receiving centre and upgrading versions. And if the installation was handed over with a grade, every change means the documentation has to be reviewed. The batteries are decided on purpose: with few devices the client changes them, with many it is a calendar in the contract. And what is handed over is training by role plus a folder saying where each outdoor detector points and with what setting, which battery each device takes, how the areas and schedules ended up and who receives which alert and in what order.
