It has been in the buildings of this country for decades.

Aritech is one of the most long-standing intruder detection brands in Europe. What to know if you have it fitted, what can be reused when modernising and what really has to be changed.

What it is and where you'll find it.

A European brand with a long history, today inside Carrier, with an installed base that rules the conversation.

Aritech makes intruder detection control panels, detectors, contacts, keypads and the modules an installation grows with. Its current line for professional installation is the Advisor Advanced family, and behind it there are earlier generations still working in a great many buildings: bank branches, public administration, hospitals, schools, industry, retail.

So the real conversation is almost never «which panel do I buy». It is «I have this, it half works, nobody knows how it is programmed, and I want to know whether to throw it out». And the honest answer is usually that the system does not have to be thrown out: it has to be audited, the badly thought-out parts redone and the pieces that really have been left behind modernised, which are normally the transmission and the detectors at the difficult points, not the panel.

How it's built.

The architecture is the classic one for this kind of system, and that is why it lasts. The panel has its zones and the building is covered by hanging expansion modules off a data bus: each module provides inputs and outputs and is put close to the detectors. In large installations several lines are used, and splitting well what hangs off each is what makes a fault local instead of general.

The zones are supervised with end-of-line resistors, so a single pair of wires tells you whether the detector has fired, whether its cover has been opened, whether its cable has been cut or whether the zone has been bridged. The values are set by the manufacturer: a zone cabled «with whatever works» still gives an alarm and stops watching for tampering, and nobody finds out until somebody tests it on purpose.

The building is split into areas with their own arming, schedule and people, with part-arming and conditions between areas, and a supervised power supply with batteries sized by calculation. What has changed over the years is the outside: transmission over the network with mobile network backup and supervision, an app for the user and remote access for maintenance. When an old installation from this house is modernised, that is almost always exactly what is changed first, because it is what has become obsolete: an installation transmitting over a route the operator no longer maintains the same way is not transmitting, even though the configuration says it is.

The order of work for finding out what you have before deciding what to buy.

  • The access and the engineer code. If the previous installer does not hand it over, that is the client's problem before it is a technical one. Whoever does not have the keys does not have a system: they have a dependency.
  • And the transmission, checked by cutting it and asking the receiving centre whether it noticed. That is the one that gives the most surprises in long-standing installations. Plus the detectors at the difficult points —outdoors, loading bays, corridors with air conditioning—, which are the ones giving the false alarms, and changing them costs a fraction of changing the system.

How it behaves with false alarms.

The current panels from this house bring what is needed: confirmation between zones before treating an alert as a confirmed intrusion, automatic exclusion of the zone that fires over and over, supervision by zone that separates alarm from tamper and from fault, entry times and routes by area and a long log. And its detectors cover the usual ground, including outdoor models designed for what actually happens in a yard at night.

What we find in long-standing installations is almost always the same, and it is not the brand's fault: twenty-year-old detectors at points that today would be solved with dual technology; sensitivities halved at some moment so it would stop being a nuisance, which leaves the zone deaf; zones disabled during building work nobody remembers; and a yard or a loading bay covered with an indoor detector, which is the exact recipe for firing at dusk when the shutter sheet cools, or when the wind moves a tarpaulin.

The grade, and the alarm receiving centre.

The European standards split alarm systems into security grades according to risk, and each grade demands things of the equipment, the cabling, the power supply, the tamper detection and the supervision of the transmission. It is set by the activity, very often by the insurance and sometimes by a specification. And there is a distinction that in old installations is especially important: equipment certified for a grade is not an installation that meets that grade, and an installation that met it fifteen years ago may not meet it today, because zones have been added, others disabled and the transmission route is no longer the one that was documented. What grade is handed over is stated by the design and signed by whoever hands it over. The receiving centre is another decision, with another contract, and it is obliged to verify the alert before passing it to the State security forces: that is why verification by image is what turns an alert into a decision.

Who it fits, and who it doesn't.

It fits, first of all, where it already is: spares, technicians who know it, users who do not have to learn another keypad and a system that does not have to be recabled. When somebody proposes replacing a whole installation from this house that works, it is worth asking what problem that solves that would not be solved by auditing it, redoing the zoning and changing the problem detectors and the transmission. And it fits medium and large new builds, especially if the client already has other sites with this brand and wants them all to look alike.

It does not fit if what you want is a phone app as the centre of the experience and a two-day deployment: it is a classic family and its centre of gravity is the keypad. Nor for a very small installation. And there is one case where we say no outright: when what is fitted is so old that there are no spares and no support left. There, patching is expensive and misleading, and the honest thing is to say the panel has to be renewed even if that makes the quotation dearer.

What we do with it.

  • The audit first: a real inventory, the programming documented, disabled zones, batteries measured, transmission checked by cutting it and the last few months of the log read zone by zone. Out of that comes a quotation for what has to be done, not for what has to be bought.
  • The re-handover setting the alarms off on purpose: every detector tested by walking in front of it, every contact opened, a lens covered, the main route cut and a call to the receiving centre. A certificate written beforehand and filled in as you go, with the time and the result for each element.
  • The maintenance with a report per element, the log reviewed, batteries measured and a check on what is still disabled and why. And the configuration saved outside the panel, which is the worst place to keep the only copy of how something is built.

Who runs it once we leave.

In these installations the split is usually bent out of shape by history, and it is worth putting it straight.

The client can and should run the day-to-day: users and codes, who arms which area, part-arming, the schedules, the one-off isolation of a zone and reading the log. In long-standing installations the normal thing is to find the opposite: one single code everybody knows, users belonging to people who left years ago and nobody able to add somebody without calling the installer. That is fixed in one afternoon, and among other things it makes the log worth something.

What needs the installer is the layer underneath: adding or removing modules and zones, changing times, entry routes or the confirmation logic, redoing areas, touching the transmission and upgrading versions. It is not to keep work for ourselves: a mistake there is not noticed until the day the alarm is needed, and if the installation was handed over with a grade, every change means the documentation has to be reviewed. And what is handed over and charged for is the usual: training by role and a folder worth having —a drawing with every detector and its zone, what hangs off each line, areas and schedules exactly as they ended up, the resistors used, the routes with their supervision and who receives which alert—. In an installation that has survived three installers, that folder is worth more than any new equipment.
