Is the fire extinguisher where it should be?
Critical items that are checked by looking: fire extinguishers, signs, beacons, valves. A round done from the camera, every day.
The round is done with a sheet of paper.
There is a list of things that have to be where they are: fire extinguishers, hose reels, defibrillators, evacuation signs, beacons, chocks. And there is a person who checks them with a sheet of paper, once a month or once a quarter.
Between one check and the next, a fire extinguisher can have been moved, hidden behind a shelving unit or gone missing. It gets found out on the next round. Or on the day it is needed.
And on a large site, the full round is half a day of somebody's time.
What is checked by looking checks itself.
You mark on the image where each item has to be. From there the system checks daily that it is still there, that it is not hidden and that nothing is blocking it.
The alert goes out the day it is missing, not on the next round. And with a photo of how it was and how it is now.
The human round does not go away: there are things you have to touch, like the pressure of an extinguisher. What goes away is the 'is it there or not', which is half the work.
What it checks.
- An item present in its marked position.
- Correct position: it is not enough for it to be there, it has to be where it belongs.
- Obstruction: something in front that stops you reaching it or seeing it.
- Evacuation signage covered, moved or broken.
- Beacons, cones and delimitation items out of place.
- Emergency doors blocked or with material in front of them.
- A tool or piece of equipment not on its board.
- A virtual identifier per item, to follow the one that moves.

A real case.
In a warehouse, three of the twelve fire extinguishers ended up behind a new shelving unit put up on a Friday. The round was due at the end of the month.
The alert went out the following Monday with the photo: the extinguisher was still there, but you could not reach it. That is exactly what an inspection writes down as a non-conformity.

Some items have a fixed place and others do not: a beacon, a tool trolley, a site fire extinguisher, a generator. Those are not tracked by position, because their position changes every day.
Each one is given a visual identifier and followed wherever it goes. The question stops being 'is it in its place?' and becomes 'where is it?', which on site is the one people actually ask.
You do not have to stick a tag on it or fit it with a locator.
How many inspections you save.
A visual check round on a medium-sized site is half a day of somebody's time, and it repeats every week or every month.
The 'it is there and you can reach it' part — which is most of the points — checks itself every day. What is left for the person is what has to be touched: pressure, seal, expiry date.
The round does not disappear. It gets shorter, and above all it stops being the only moment when anything is known.
What an inspection asks for.
- A dated record of every check, with an image.
- A history of incidents: what was missing, when, and how long it took to resolve.
- Traceability of who received the alert.
- Exportable, to attach to the file.

What it does not do.
It does not check the internal condition of anything. A fire extinguisher can be in its place and depressurised: that is told by the gauge or the technician, not the camera.
And it only covers what is inside a field of view. A large site means several cameras, and there are places where there is none.

What people ask us.
▸Does it replace the fire extinguisher inspection?
No. The inspection checks pressure, seal and date, and that has to be touched.
What it replaces is the 'it is there and you can reach it' part, which is the one done by looking and the one that most often fails between one inspection and the next.
▸How many items per camera?
As many as can be seen sharply. A fire extinguisher fifteen metres away in a wide-angle image is a red dot: you know whether it is there or not, but little more.
The sensible thing is to mark the items already in the field of view for some other reason, instead of fitting one camera per extinguisher.
▸Does it warn you if somebody uses one?
It warns you that it is no longer where it was. Whether that is because it has been used, taken away or moved, the video tells you.
▸Can you produce a report for the inspection?
Yes: the record of daily checks with date and photo is exactly what an inspection asks for, and what today is handed over as a signed sheet of paper.
