The platform for whoever already has a lot of Pelco installed.

There are thousands of installations with Pelco domes and systems put in years ago, working, that nobody wants to throw away. VideoXpert is the route designed for that: modernising the video management without starting from scratch. That is its best argument, and it also marks out who it makes no sense for.

What it is, and where it comes from.

Video management software from Pelco, with one peculiarity that explains nearly everything: its typical customer was already a Pelco customer.

Pelco has been in control rooms for decades, above all with moving cameras and with recording systems from earlier generations. A lot of that base is still installed and in use: town councils, campuses, casinos, ports, industry.

The problem it solves, exactly as it is put: I have eighty Pelco cameras and two old systems from the same brand, I want a modern control room and I do not want a full replacement. VideoXpert can integrate part of those systems, and that turns a replacement into a transition.

One fact worth having, and it is not an opinion: Pelco has belonged to the same group as Avigilon since 2020. That says nothing bad about the platform, and it is a question about the product plan that has to be put to the manufacturer in writing before you buy.

How it is built.

Separate pieces with one job each, and one of them gets sized wrongly time after time.

There is a core that manages configuration, users, permissions and events; recording units that write the video; and an operator client. It is built together or spread out, and there is a compact version for small installations with fewer pieces to maintain.

The piece that makes the difference between a smooth system and a jerky one is the distribution gateway: the one that serves the clients that are not the control room program —browsers, phones, remote access— and converts the streams when it has to.

The classic mistake is sizing it for handover day, when three people are watching, and finding out six months later that there are twenty shift supervisors coming in from their phones. It is not fixed with more drive space.

Growing means adding recording units and spreading cameras out, which is simple to budget for. For several sites there is an aggregation scheme, with the warning that comes with every federation: a remote camera does not look the same, and permissions get managed twice.

And the part that is its reason for being: integrating the earlier Pelco systems. It can be done and it is often the key to the project. Which specific system, on what version and with what limitations gets checked before the quotation, not after it is signed.

What connects, and where to ask first.

It is time to be clear: the catalogue of integrations is shorter than on the big open platforms, and that changes how you work.

There is an SDK and an API, and it integrates with access control, intruder detection and third-party management systems. What there is not is a catalogue with hundreds of modules maintained by hundreds of companies: here you check the system, the version and who maintains the connector.

That is not a fault, it is a project fact: for anyone who wants the video tied to another brand's access control it is the first thing to settle, and sometimes that combination asks for a different platform.

With cameras, the brand's own are the natural ground and third-party ones come in over ONVIF to view and record, without their own functions or their analytics. And one detail that does matter here: control of moving cameras, with presets, tours and a physical keyboard, is one of the things Pelco does most finely, and in a control room where cameras get moved all day that counts.

How it is licensed, and what arrives in year three.

By camera channel and by tier. There is a compact version and versions for large installations, and what changes is not cosmetic: number of cameras, spreading across several servers, aggregation of sites. Choosing a tier is choosing a ceiling.

On top, the annual support and updates contract. Letting it lapse leaves the system standing still, with the usual effect: the cameras and operating systems that come later ask for versions you can no longer install.

The second place to look is particular to this platform: the capacity of the distribution gateway, which is not only licence, it is hardware. Anyone who has not counted the remote sessions two years from now has an expansion hidden there.

Who it fits, and who it does not.

Of the six it is the one with the most clearly defined customer. That makes the conversation easier, in both directions.

Gets the benefit

Whoever already has a lot of Pelco installed and working and wants to modernise the control room without replacing it all at once. Control rooms with shift operators who work with a keyboard and joystick. And installations with a lot of moving cameras and tours, where fine control is daily work.

Pays over the odds

A new installation, with nothing from this brand in place, that needs to integrate a lot of third-party systems and wants powerful analytics out of the box. If there is no installed base to make use of, this platform's best argument does not apply, and it is better to know that sooner than later.

The check that never gets skipped

If the project leans on integrating earlier Pelco systems, that gets verified before the quotation: which system, which version and which functions travel. It is the point where a calm transition turns into an unbudgeted replacement.

What we do.

Here the valuable work is in two places: the inventory of what is already there and the sizing of the remote sessions.

  • The real inventory of what is installed, unit by unit, with model and version. Without that you cannot say what gets integrated and what gets replaced, and in an installation with years on it that inventory is half the project.
  • The integration check on the earlier systems before quoting: what can be seen from the new client, with what limitations, and which part has to be replaced with its price, even if it spoils the quotation. And the sizing of the distribution gateway counting the remote sessions two years from now, not the ones in handover week.
  • The spread of recording units and the retention calculation at the real resolution and frame rate, handed over so it can be argued with. With the video network separate from the company's, and with it said which part of the old cabling holds up and which part does not.
  • The control room: monitors, views, tours, presets and the keyboard configuration exactly as those people use them. With the operators there, not with a drawing. It is the part that decides whether the system gets used.
  • The migration: the old recordings do not convert. The previous system is kept read-only until its retention runs out, or the essentials get exported, and running the two side by side costs space, licences and hours, from the budget onwards.
  • The handover tests written beforehand: switch off a recording unit; open the real number of remote sessions expected, all at once, and measure; cut the link to an aggregated site; and test the control of moving cameras with the operator who is going to use it.
  • Documentation and maintenance, with the date of the manufacturer's support contract in the calendar: that is the one that gets left to expire without anyone noticing.

Who operates it afterwards.

It is a control room platform, and that means the security team carries more weight here than in almost any of the six.

IT keeps machines, storage, video network and backups. With one specific task: watching the load on the distribution gateway. That is where it shows, before any other piece, that more people are watching from outside than were allowed for.

Security keeps far more than usual: permissions, views and tours, presets for the moving cameras, alarms and their priority, exporting and training the new shifts. That is not administration, it is operation, and the control room supervisor has to be able to do it.

What is left to the integrator is the version jumps, the growth of the storage and of the gateway, and —the thing most particular to this platform— the earlier systems that have stayed integrated. That part ages, and when it gets retired is reviewed every year.

Training: here there is more of it than on the others and it belongs to the operator. A day in the control room, with the keyboard they are going to use, plus one for the control room supervisor and a session for IT. With one-page scripts for whatever gets repeated every week.

Analytics: little as standard, and it is worth knowing.

This is the point where this platform is the most modest of the six, and this page says it better than a demonstration does.

As standard there is motion detection, which is geometry: pixels changing in a zone. It solves more than it looks like it does, and it is what fills a shift with alerts when the light changes.

What comes beyond that depends above all on the cameras: the ones with analytics on board generate their own alerts and the platform picks them up. The analytics you are going to have is largely decided by the camera you fit, not by the software, and that changes the camera budget.

You can add third-party analytics and number plates by integration, with a bigger warning than on the large open ones: the one you want may or may not exist, and that gets checked before it goes in the quotation.

The real limit, plainly: if what you need is to understand what is happening in the scene, this platform on its own is not where you are going to find it. It is a video management and control room platform, and at that it is solid. The understanding has to be brought in.
