Twenty-four PoE ports are not twenty-four cameras.
Switching with power over the network cable for small and medium installations, managed from a browser and with no training course. There are places where it is the right choice, and three where it falls short.
What kind of house it is.
A network house with a wide range, and in security it turns up through one specific part of the catalogue.
It covers everything from the box for the home to the managed cabinet switch, and that explains why the brand draws opposite opinions: the box on the shelf of a shopping centre is not the same thing as the managed switch with fast uplink ports from its professional range. In video it turns up through that second part, and in particular through the line meant for audio and video over the network.
What it brings is a specific ratio: for modest money you get a genuinely managed switch —separate networks, visibility per port, traffic priority, turning a port off and on remotely— without needing anyone who knows the command line. And it is worth saying it plainly: a small installation with a tight budget is a legitimate case, not a second-class customer. What is not legitimate is fitting the access range where something else is needed and not saying so.
The power budget, and why all the ports are not all of them.
It is the line on the datasheet that gets read least and the one that causes the most faults.
A switch that powers cameras over the network cable has two numbers: the most it can give on one port and the most adding up all of them. The second is almost never the first multiplied by the number of ports, and that is where the misunderstanding sits: a switch that advertises power on all its ports does not give it on all of them at once if the cameras ask for a lot.
What happens when it runs out is the interesting part. The switch does not share out the shortage: it leaves ports without power, and which ones is a priority decision that by default is usually the order of the port number. Nobody has configured it. So the camera left out is the one on the highest port, which is normally the last one added, which is usually the one at the new and important spot.
And consumption is not the one on the label: a camera with a heater and a motor asks for a good deal more on a frosty night than on the May afternoon when everything was tested. That is where the prettiest fault in this trade comes from: a couple of cameras restart before dawn in winter and by morning they are spotless, so nobody sees anything odd when they go and look. The sum is done with winter consumption, and the switch is never filled: in two years' time somebody is going to put two cameras on the ports that were left over.
The throughput when they all pull at once.
The second place where the access range falls short, and it is not in the brochure either.
Cameras do not talk to each other: they all send to the recorder. So everything coming in through a switch's ports goes out through the uplink port heading to the recorder or to the next cabinet, and if that port is the same speed as the camera ports, it is the bottleneck of the whole cabinet however many ports the switch has. That is what separates the range that works for video from the one that does not, and it is looked at before the price.
There is a second number, more hidden: the internal capacity. Some access-range switches cannot move all their ports flat out at the same time, because the electronics are sized for office use, where it never happens. With cameras it does happen: all of them sending, all day, and several people watching live, which is outbound traffic on top of the inbound. With a lot of cameras per cabinet, that number has to be looked at.
How it is administered, and what support there is the day it fails.
The first is a real advantage. The second is the conversation nobody has before buying.
Administration is through the browser and it is genuinely simple: separating the cameras onto their own network, seeing how much power each port is giving, restarting a camera by switching its port off, putting video ahead of other traffic. All of that is done in an afternoon without knowing the command line, and for an installation with no IT department it is exactly what is needed. Part of the range can also be managed from the manufacturer's cloud, which works well for running several small sites that are all the same.
Support is the other side. In this range it is a replacement warranty: when a box dies, it is processed, it is sent and it arrives. There is no technician who comes out and no contract for replacement within hours, and you have to know that, because while the box is travelling your installation is without that cabinet.
What we do to make up for it is far cheaper than moving up a range: a spare switch on the customer's shelf, with its configuration saved in a file. Replacing it becomes twenty minutes of work for somebody who is nearby. Without a spare, any fault lasts as long as the transport takes, and in August that can be a week.
Where it fits well.
And it fits in more places than a specification would admit.
In installations of one cabinet or two, with one or two dozen cameras, in a building at normal temperature, where the budget is tight and there is no IT department behind it: shops, offices, clinics, workshops, residential blocks, industrial units with an office, schools, small hotels. There it is the right choice: managed, diagnosable, enough, and without paying for functions nobody is going to switch on.
And it fits as a floor switch in a larger installation whose core is from another house, which is very common: the corridor cabinet with eight cameras does not need the same equipment as the cabinet that gathers all the fibre.
Where we would not put it.
Four cases. None of them is «because it is cheap».
In a cabinet that gets hot. This range does not carry the reinforcement of industrial equipment, and the closed street cabinet in August is where that shows: restarts before dawn and no clue why. Before choosing the switch you have to sort out the cabinet.
Where the ring has to rebuild itself in milliseconds. This range knows how to make alternative paths, but with the generic mechanism, which takes seconds, and seconds of interruption on a camera network are gaps in the recording and an avalanche of camera-lost alerts.
In the core of a large installation, where the throughput of every cabinet comes together and where one failure leaves everything blind. There you have to look at internal capacity, power redundancy and support contract, and this range does not compete on that.
And where there is already an IT team with their house, their policy and their spare in the store. Not because this equipment is worse, but because one more brand means one more console and one more argument on the day of the fault. If what they have takes the video, we build on what they have and bring nothing in.
What really decides the project.
Five things, and the make of the switch is the last one.
- The switch's power total against the cameras' winter consumption, with margin and with plenty of free ports.
- The speed of the uplink port that leaves the cabinet. If it is the same as the camera ports, it is the bottleneck and there is no configuration that fixes it.
- The cabinet temperature in August, measured and not assumed. It comes before every other decision.
- Whether a second route is needed, and how much interruption the recording can take. That decides the range, not the price.
- What happens the day a box dies. A spare with the configuration saved, or accepting that the cabinet is out until the delivery arrives: both are valid, and what is not valid is having no answer.
Who administers it when we leave.
Of the ten, this is the one that most easily stays in the customer's hands. And it is one of its reasons for existing.
The browser console is meant to be used by somebody who does not make a living from this: the person in charge of maintenance in a building, the IT person who also looks after the computers, the owner of the business. With a one-hour session and a one-page procedure they run the day to day without calling anyone. They are handed their own administrator account with their password and not ours, the configuration in a file and the map of which camera is on which port.
The boundary is in two things, and both are sums and not settings: adding cameras without recalculating the switch's power —which is what produces the restarts before dawn six months later— and changing the separation of networks, which done badly leaves the network passing traffic with the boundary open, which is worse than a network that is down because nobody notices it.
And if your house already has an IT team with another brand, it is built with theirs. In this range, more than in any other, the particular brand is what matters least: what decides whether the video works is the power sum, the speed of the outbound link and the cabinet temperature. We bring that worked out for whatever equipment they want to use, and when their equipment does not do it, it is explained with the numbers and before signing.
