Will any network cable do?
No. Copper-clad aluminium cable looks the same from the outside, costs a fair bit less and carries the data, but it does not carry the current: it heats up, it drops voltage along the way and the camera at the end of the run comes up short. There is no way of seeing it by looking, and it is one of the first things we check when an installation restarts on its own.
Then there is where the cable runs. The one going outdoors or underground has to be made for that, with its protection against water and against sunlight; the one running near power lines is better screened, with the screen bonded where it should be, because a badly earthed screen is worse than none at all.
And checking a run means certifying it with a tester, not seeing that the camera gives a picture. A badly terminated cable gives a picture on day one and errors in the second summer.
