What are indoor infrared curtains and barriers for?
For watching a plane instead of a volume: a narrow strip in front of a window, a shop window, a corridor, a stairwell or the whole façade from the inside.
That is what makes it possible to protect the skin of the building and leave the inside free, and it is probably the decision that does most to make a system actually get used: you can set the inner perimeter and carry on working, or sleeping, inside. And because the beam is narrow, there is far less to go wrong: anything moving outside that strip simply does not exist as far as the detector is concerned.
Its limits are about maintenance. The strip has to be kept clear: a tarpaulin, a pallet, a half-lowered blind or a plant that has grown will cancel it. And on beam barriers the alignment between transmitter and receiver has to be kept. If the system supervises those devices, a misaligned barrier raises an alert; if it does not supervise them, it goes blind in silence, which is the worst thing that can happen.
