How do you know a camera has been down for three days?
Because something checks it automatically every day. A camera that has gone blind is still switched on and still sending an image: it is just that the image is black, or the inside of the bag somebody hung in front of it. The recorder sees nothing odd, because it is receiving video. And nobody raises the alarm, because nobody watches forty screens.
Watching that means checking every day that each camera is still there, that what it sends looks like what it was sending yesterday, that the drives are healthy, that the recording covers the days it should, that the backup unit charges and that the temperature in the cabinet is the same as always.
When the installation has that watch under contract, we open the alert ourselves and we ring: nobody has to notice first. When it does not, it is worth knowing that and deciding about it, instead of finding out on the day those three weeks of recording were needed.
