The specification written for me already names a brand, what do you do?
We comply if the specification says so, and we say what we think before quoting. Often the brand is there for a good reason: the client already has it in other buildings, there is a maintenance firm that knows it or there is a group decision. That is a legitimate criterion and it weighs more than our opinion.
Other times it is there for a reason that does not stand up, and you recognise it because the characteristics asked for are those of one specific product sheet. When that happens we say so, we explain what that choice closes off —which extensions get tied down, which licences will be needed later, who you are left with for the maintenance— and we propose alternatives. The decision is still the client's.
What we do not do is accept equipment that cannot give what the specification itself asks for and keep quiet until it shows. That gets said in writing before signing.
