Will you take on the maintenance of an installation somebody else fitted?
Yes, and it is a big part of the work. Hardly any system is built from scratch on an empty plot: there is something already in, from two or three different suppliers and half documented.
What we do before signing anything is a run through what is there and in what state: which camera really covers what, how many days of recording there are right now —which is almost never what people thought—, which alarms go off and who they reach, which equipment no longer has spares. Out of that comes what stays, what gets replaced and in what order.
And there is one case where we say no: when the installation is in a state where signing a maintenance contract would mean signing that the thing works. There the honest answer is to say what would have to be put right first, even if the answer is not welcome.
