What is the maintenance log and who requires it?
It is the historical record of everything that has been done to the installation: inspections, faults, replacements, extensions, who did them and when. In fire detection and in security installations connected to an alarm receiving centre it is documentation an inspection can ask for; everywhere else it is what lets you know what happened before you arrived.
It can be kept on paper or in a system, but it has to be in the client's hands and not only the maintenance company's. If the log lives solely on the supplier's computer, the day the supplier changes the history of the installation disappears.
It is the first thing we ask for when we take over an installation from somebody else, and when it does not exist, the first thing we start building.
