Are magnetic contacts any use?
They are worth it, and they are among the most reliable things there are, with one important qualification: they detect the leaf separating from the frame, not somebody forcing the door without actually opening it.
That is why they do not replace volumetric detection, they complement it: the contact gives the alert at the instant of opening, without waiting for anybody to cross a zone, and that brings the alarm forward. For shutters, sectional doors and sliding doors there are specific versions, because the travel and the material change the distance at which the contact acts.
Two details separate a well-fitted contact from a decorative one. Placing it on the opening edge and not on the hinge side, where the leaf barely separates and can be opened a hand's width without setting anything off. And, when the grade requires it, the use of balanced contacts, which detect if somebody brings a magnet up from outside to fool the sensor: an ordinary contact is defeated that way, and anybody who bothers to look it up knows it.
