Microwave or infrared beams?

Microwave barriers cover a long volume between two posts and cope well with fog and rain; active infrared ones are narrow beams between transmitter and receiver, are adjusted very precisely and suffer more with dense fog, heavy rain and snow.

Microwave needs flat, clear ground: a mound, a large puddle or settled snow changes its pattern. It has a dead zone next to the transmitter that has to be overlapped by the next barrier, and it does not take kindly to vegetation moving inside the beam. In exchange, the weather does not blind it, and that is why it is what goes in where there is fog for much of the winter.

The infrared barrier behaves very well on façades, straight runs and fences, and it allows logic that greatly reduces the silly alert: requiring several beams to be broken at once rules out a bird or a leaf. It needs careful alignment and posts that do not move; a post that sways in the wind is a permanent source of alerts, and there the fix is the post, not the sensor.
