What stands up to rain, fog and snow, and what does not?
In short: what does not depend on seeing the scene copes better. Buried cable and the sensor fence barely notice fog, microwave barriers do not either, and active infrared barriers and ordinary cameras are the ones that suffer most.
The detail matters more than the summary. Settled snow changes the pattern of a microwave barrier and can end up burying the strip of a buried cable. Waterlogged ground alters the sensitivity of the buried cable. Strong wind moves the fence and the posts, and with them the sensor fences and any badly anchored barrier. And heavy rain greatly reduces the range of an infrared beam and of a camera.
That is why designing a perimeter includes a question almost nobody asks on the visit: what does this place do on the worst day of the year. If the answer is that there is fog here for much of the winter, that decides the technology before anything else does, price included.
