Axis is not the cheapest camera on the pole. It is the one still alive eight years on.

Swedish, open, and the one that keeps a camera updated for longest. It gets argued about on the day of purchase and appreciated in the fifth year. Here is which points we propose it for and which ones we do not.

What kind of manufacturer it is.

The network camera, as it is understood today, came out of this house. That explains its character better than any brochure.

It is an engineering manufacturer before a price one. It designs its own image processing, it publishes the documentation for its equipment and it lets other people's video software talk to it without asking permission. What you buy is equipment that will still be documented in five years' time.

What it puts first is a long life. It releases firmware for cameras that have been on the pole for years and it keeps product lines going long enough for you to extend with the same model two years later. In an industrial unit with forty cameras, that is the difference between maintaining and rebuilding.

What it sacrifices is the price per camera. For the same number of pixels there is much cheaper equipment, and anyone comparing quotations on a spreadsheet always finds it dear. The sum changes when you add in the hours of setting up and the years the equipment stays maintainable.

Where it behaves well.

Outdoors with difficult light is where you notice what you have paid for. An industrial unit door with the sun straight into it in the afternoon, a loading bay where the lorry comes out of the shade into full sun, a turnstile against a glazed wall. The very dark and the very bright in the same field of view: there it is not the number of pixels that decides, it is that the processing does not turn the shadow into a black smear or the door into a white one.

Also where something has to be read —a number plate, a container number— because reading a moving object is a question of exposure time and focus before megapixels, and here there is fine control over both. And in large or mixed installations, where it matters that forty units can be configured in one run and that the customer's IT people do not have to open anything odd on their network.

Where we would not put it.

This is what separates a recommendation from a catalogue.

In a small installation with easy scenes —a warehouse with ceiling lighting, a corridor, a reception— paying for this brand is paying for a reserve nobody is going to use: there is no backlight, the detail needed is low and any decent piece of equipment lasts four years without giving trouble.

Nor when thirty cameras are needed and the budget stretches to eighteen. That conversation is had beforehand and with the plan in front of you: either eighteen well placed from this brand, or thirty from another if what is being asked of the image allows it. What we do not do is spread the money across more cameras than reach the detail needed.

The analytics it carries inside, and where they stop.

What the camera does on its own, with nothing behind it. And how far it goes.

These units carry analytics inside and allow applications to be installed on the device itself, from the manufacturer or from third parties: alerting that something has crossed a line, that somebody is in an area, telling whether what is moving is a person or a vehicle, reading number plates. It works, it costs little and it carries on working with the network down.

Its limit is the limit of all analytics living in a camera: it sees its own field of view and nothing else, and it solves what can be drawn. A line, a zone, a dwell time. It does not know what happened thirty seconds earlier on the camera next door, and it does not understand a situation that will not fit into a rule.

What comes now is a recommendation with an interest of our own, so it is declared: in the same house there is IRIS Neural, the NVMS from Infinity Neural, the other company in the group. It is our own product. We would rather you knew it by reading this line.

It brings the understanding of the scene when what is needed goes beyond a line and a zone. They sit together well: the camera filters the easy part at the edge and the system deals with what needs context. And if a line and an alert solve the problem, the camera on its own is enough and we say so.

  • The choice point by point. The difference between the top range and the middle one is not the number of pixels: it is how they behave in backlight and at night. Putting the same camera at all twenty points is convenient and it is expensive.
  • The lens and the field of view, with the plan and before buying: how much scene each camera takes in and how much detail reaches the square metre where a face has to be seen or a number plate read.
  • The installation: height, tilt, sealing of the wall gland, power with reserve, and the junction box somewhere you can still reach without a cherry picker in three years' time.
  • The setting up at the bad hour, which almost nobody invoices and which decides everything: exposure and focus with the sun straight in during the afternoon, and again at night.
  • The maintenance: firmware with judgement —not the day it comes out—, passwords in the customer's name and, at every inspection, looking again at what can be seen from each camera.

The angle and the height are not decided at fitting time.

What you will be able to do with that image over ten years is decided by three things: where the camera looks from, at what tilt and with what light. Ten degrees too many and it stops reading a number plate and starts seeing the roof of the car, and no software fixes that afterwards, not even ours. That is why the field of view is settled in the project, with the plan and the bad hours on the table, and not with the installer already up the ladder.
