EL.MO. is an Italian manufacturer that makes intruder detection control panels and also outdoor detection. Both things coming from the same house has real advantages and it has a trap. Both are told here, because the trap is paid for in winter.

What EL.MO. is and where it turns up.

An Italian electronic security manufacturer sold in Spain through distribution. It makes intruder detection control panels, its own indoor detectors and outdoor detection. That last part is what separates it from its siblings in the range.

You find it where what has to be protected does not stop at the door: industrial units with a yard, open-air material stores, dealerships, workshops, houses with grounds, small industrial sites. And also in retail, residents' associations and offices, like any panel in its range.

The typical conversation is this: there is a unit with a yard where material is kept, they come in through the yard, and you want one single installation for both, with one keypad, one maintenance contract and one number to ring. That is a legitimate wish and it is where the delicate part begins.

How it's built.

Inside it is a professional mid-range panel: a board with its zones, a bus with keypads, expanders, readers and auxiliary power supplies, partitions for arming separately, and end-of-line in the cabled zones so that cutting a cable raises an alert instead of leaving a detector dead in silence.

The partitions weigh more here than in an indoor-only installation, for a practical reason: the yard and the unit have different schedules. You have to be able to have the yard armed while work carries on inside. If that is not split from the design stage, what happens is that neither of them gets armed.

And the power supply stops being a formality: every element outside needs power and has to survive a cut. The autonomy is calculated; estimating it is how you get to an installation that goes dead two hours after the cut.

The trap of having the whole catalogue.

One house making the panel and the outdoors is convenient. And the convenience is exactly what has to be watched.

The advantages are real: one panel, one keypad, one file, one maintenance contract and one person to talk to when something fails. On a medium-sized installation that shows in the price and in the day-to-day.

The trap is that the outdoors is not solved with the detector you happen to have in your hand: it is solved with the technology that holds up on THAT ground. When one house gives you the panel and the outdoors too, the temptation is to cover the yard with whatever is in its catalogue, even though that yard called for a sensor cable on the fence, a microwave field or a beam in a narrow passage.

That decision is not noticed on handover day. It is noticed in November, when the rain comes in sideways and the yard goes off three times a night; then somebody lowers the sensitivity, and then the yard stops being protected without anybody having switched it off. So first you decide what technology each stretch calls for and then you look at who makes it. A panel from here with outdoor detection from a specialist is a perfectly normal installation.

The intruder detection area, and why the false alarm rules

What the data sheet decides.

  • What perimeter stretches there are and what each one calls for. A fence, a wall, a gap between two units and a lorry gate are four different problems.
  • Partitions, with the outside separated from the inside and split by stretch. Being able to arm the yard without arming the unit is not a luxury: it is the condition for the system still being armed a year from now.
  • How many zones today and how many in three years: extending once the trench is filled in costs far more than the expander that is missing. And power supply and autonomy with everything hanging off it, the outdoor gear included.
  • The two routes for the alert: IP and mobile data with supervision. If the installation is old and dialled out by telephone, check whether it is still reporting — many stopped when the client moved to fibre.
  • Tamper detection on everything, and outdoors more so: a junction box on a post that can be opened without anybody finding out is the most comfortable way in there is. And how it joins up with the video, which outdoors is not an extra.

How it behaves with false alarms.

Indoors, like its siblings. Outdoors, the bar is different.

Indoors what holds for any panel in its range holds here: what rules is the detector and its position, and the panel brings three tools almost nobody configures — requiring two detectors to see the same thing, isolating the zone that has fired several times in one arming, and the event log.

Outdoors the scene is another one: wind, rain, fog, animals and vegetation that grows. None of that is a defect in the equipment, they are the conditions of the site. A well-made perimeter is not one that notices nothing: it is one that tells what matters from what happens every night, by choosing the technology for the ground and requiring agreement where it is needed.

And the step that changes everything is looking before you send somebody out. Here we declare what has to be declared: IRIS Neural is the NVMS of Infinity Neural, the other company in this group, which is to say our own product. The grade, and the alarm receiving centre.

The EN 50131 standards classify alarm systems into security grades, and each grade demands specific things of the equipment, the cabling, the power supply and the tamper detection. The grade is set by the risk of the activity and, in many cases, by the insurance policy.

Equipment being declared for a grade and an installation meeting that grade are two different things: the second includes the whole assembly and the file. What grade each model from this house supports is read in its documentation, and with the outdoor elements it has to be read more carefully still.

The question, to us as well, is what grade is being handed over and that it be handed over in writing. We do not state it here: it depends on the design, and it is asserted by whoever signs. And connecting to an alarm receiving centre is another decision, with its own regulations and its own contract, and with one extra consequence outdoors: you have to write down what is done with an alert from outside, which is not handled the same way as one from inside.

Who it fits, and who it doesn't.

It fits where you have to cover indoors and outdoors on an installation of modest size, with no budget for two systems and a wish to have one single maintenance contract: units with a yard, workshops, dealerships, material stores, plots with a house on them.

It does not fit if the perimeter is the main problem and it is demanding: a large site, kilometres of fence, irregular ground, or a need to know at which metre the fence was touched. There you start by choosing the perimeter technology, and the panel becomes one more piece.

And it does not fit if there are many sites to govern from a single place, with users synchronised to the company directory: this range is not designed to be administered as a fleet.

What we do with it.

  • Walking the perimeter on foot, stretch by stretch, before looking at any catalogue —this house's included—: slope, vegetation, puddles, fences that vibrate and where they really come in. At night, and in the bad season if we can.
  • The sizing with the numbers in front of us: zones, partitions, bus current draw, what is outside and the autonomy. Calculated.
  • The installation: end-of-line in the cabled zones, tamper detection on everything —outdoor boxes included—, weatherproof containment, rigid posts for anything that has to be aligned, and the two routes for the alert.
  • The commissioning with a certificate written beforehand: detector by detector, and on the perimeter walking, running, on all fours and along the edges of each stretch, with the time and the result. What is not in the certificate was not tested.
  • The maintenance with a seasonal adjustment visit written into the contract: the vegetation grows, the ground settles and the post aligned in September is not aligned in January. And the documentation and the keys in the client's name.

Who operates it once we leave.

Arming and disarming by partition, managing users and reading the log is run by the client. With one proviso that outdoors matters most: whoever arms the yard has to understand what arming it means — that the lorry cannot be left manoeuvring outside and the gate cannot be left open «for a moment».

What the client does not touch is the layer underneath, and very particularly the adjustment of an outdoor detector: touching it without knowing what you are touching is the fastest way for the yard to stop detecting without anybody finding out.

And the isolation hurts more here: the yard zone that was isolated «one day» is exactly the hole they come in through. Every isolation with an expiry date, the inspection hunting them down, and a file saying what technology is on each stretch and who the system calls.
