I have old analogue cameras. Can the cabling be reused?
Often yes, and it is what saves the most money in a refit, because the big cost of an installation is not the camera: it is opening up trunking, crossing yards and going back up the posts. The existing coax allows two routes.
One: keep the coax and replace cameras and recorder with equipment that transmits high definition over that same cable. You gain resolution without touching the cabling and you carry on without a network, which means without the flexibility of video over a network. Two: turn the coax into a data link with adaptors at both ends, and put network cameras on it through the cable that was always there, with power included in some cases. That is the route that leaves the installation ready to grow.
What has to be checked before promising it is the real state of the cable: type, length of each run, joints, whether there are spurs and what condition the containment is in. It is a check done run by run with an instrument, not by looking at the drawing, because in old installations the drawing and reality almost never match.
