The system gives false alarms constantly, what do you do?
First you find out what is causing them, and you do not touch the threshold. The events are pulled off the control panel with date, time and point, and a pattern almost always appears: always the same detector, always at the same time, always the day they clean with steam, always when the air conditioning starts. With the pattern identified, the correction is one of four: change the detector technology, move it, change its settings or change what happens in that place.
On analogue addressable panels there are also two tools that get used very little. One is requiring two detectors to agree before a general alarm is given. The other is programming an investigation time: the panel alerts the staff, somebody goes to check it and, if nobody confirms within the time, the general alarm sounds by itself. The control panel standard itself limits how long that delay can be, and it only makes sense where there are permanent staff with written instructions.
What you do not do is turn down the sensitivity of the whole system until it stops being a nuisance, nor leave a zone disabled «until they come». If something has to be disabled, you note who, when, why and what measure is in place meanwhile, and you set a date for putting it back. A detector disabled in silence is still drawn on the drawings and is still declared on the policy.
