What brings a radio link down?
Four things, more or less in this order: losing line of sight, interference, water and wind. None of them warns you before it happens.
Line of sight is the first and the most forgotten, because it changes on its own: a tree that grows, a crane that appears, a new industrial unit, a tall lorry that always parks in the same place. And it is not enough for the two antennas to see each other: around that straight line you need a clear volume, and an obstacle grazing underneath already degrades the link even if it does not block it.
Then there is interference, because the free bands keep filling up with neighbours nobody coordinates; heavy rain, which hits the high frequencies most; and the mounting, because a mast that sways in the wind puts highly directional antennas out of alignment. That is why the link is measured once installed, the reference signal level is written down and it is watched: when it starts to drop, there is still time.
