Can I virtualise the recorder?
The management part, yes, and it is nearly always worth it: the application server, the database, the access control software. The part that writes video non-stop is the one that gives trouble when it is put on a virtual platform shared with the rest of the company.
The reason is the type of work: video is constant, orderly writing, and on shared storage it competes with everything else. The result is not an outage, it is recording with gaps that show up on the days another machine has a peak. If it is virtualised, it is done with dedicated storage, with reserved resources and knowing that a graphics card inside a virtual machine adds a complication of its own.
And there is a reason that is not technical: if the video lives on the client's virtual platform, responsibility for performance is split between two parties. That gets written down before it is built, not on the day three hours of recording are missing.
