Can I use the network the company already has?
Often yes, and it is the first thing we look at, but the answer is not given without doing the sums. You have to see how much throughput we are going to add, what capacity the links between cabinets have, whether the switches can be managed, how much power is free to feed cameras over the cable and who is going to look after all of it next year.
We almost never start from nothing: there is already a network and somebody in IT who runs it and does not want two hundred new devices inside it. They are right, and that conversation goes well if we turn up with the numbers done and with the list of what we are never going to ask of their network.
And if the network there is cannot cope, that gets said before signing and not in the third month. Sharing it to save money and not saying so is the most common way for the problem to turn up when there is no budget left to fix it.
