Can you work on a system that another company installed?
Yes, and it is half of what we do. It starts with a survey: what is there, where, how it is connected, with what versions and what documentation exists. On installations with a few years behind them, that survey is nearly always the first reliable document that system has ever had.
There are two things that can hold it up and they get checked before promising anything: whether the equipment allows somebody else to administer it —sometimes only whoever built it has the passwords— and whether the manufacturer reserves parts of the system to certain figures. When there is something we cannot touch, we say what it is and who can.
And if on opening it up it turns out that what is installed cannot do what is wanted, that goes in the report and not three invoices later. It is more uncomfortable and it is the only way for the second company not to repeat what the first one did.
