What happens when a drive fails?

If the array has redundancy, nothing visible happens: the system carries on recording and the part is changed without switching anything off. What starts at that moment is the rebuild, which is the part almost nobody talks about.

While the new drive is being filled —hours, or days on large arrays— the other drives work flat out, and that is exactly the moment when the second one is most likely to go. If it goes then, there is nothing left to rebuild.

That is why two things matter more than the RAID itself: that somebody finds out the same day the first drive fails, because a broken drive in a cabinet nobody looks at tells nobody, and that there is a spare of the same type to hand.
