How do you coordinate with the other trades?
With three concrete things: being at the site meetings from the start, handing over a written list of what we need from each trade with its date, and working from coordinated drawings instead of our own. Electronic security crosses with the electrician —power, backup power, separation of circuits—, with the air conditioning and smoke control people, with the lift engineer, with the door joinery and with whoever does the fire suppression.
The crossings most often resolved late are four: the power for whatever has to stay alive with no mains, the air conditioning interlock, the door wiring so they release when the fire alarm goes off, and the signals going back and forth between systems from different suppliers. With water suppression, which is not ours, the contact points are the flow and pump set status signals and the air conditioning shutdown; they are agreed in a meeting and written down.
The rule we apply is simple: if a signal crosses the boundary between two companies, it has a named person responsible and a test that proves it. Without that, each one hands over their part and the first time they are tested together is the day of the inspection.
