Do you need a spare drive?
On any system that records something that matters, yes. There are two ways: one fitted inside the unit and on standby, which comes in by itself as soon as another fails, or one kept in the cabinet, which is cheaper and depends on somebody going to fit it.
The difference between the two is the time the set spends unprotected, which with the internal one is minutes and with the one in the cabinet is however long somebody takes to get there. On an unattended or remote installation, that difference is everything.
And the spare should be the same model and capacity. A different drive usually goes in, and sometimes it works worse or holds the whole set back. Buying it along with the system costs little; buying it the day one fails can mean weeks of waiting, and those weeks are spent without a safety net.
