Is a generator needed?
Only when the system has to stay alive through long outages, and those are few: critical installations, isolated sites with an unreliable mains supply, or buildings where security cannot stop even for an hour. For almost everything else, a properly sized backup unit and an orderly shutdown are the right answer.
Where there already is a generator —a hospital, a data centre, a factory— the question is a different one, and it is the one that goes wrong most often: whether the board the security hangs off actually goes through it. Several times we have found an immaculate generator with the security cabinet plugged into a line that had no backup power at all.
And even with a generator, you still need battery: a generator takes time to start and to stabilise, and that gap is covered only by the backup unit.
