What happens to the drives when equipment is taken out of service?
They are wiped so that they cannot be recovered, and it is put in writing. The drives from a recorder taken out of service hold months of images of identifiable people inside them: throwing them away, selling them or sending them off without wiping them is a data breach, and the one who answers for it is the owner of the images.
Depending on the case, secure erasure by overwriting with a data destruction certificate, or physical destruction when the drive no longer starts or cannot be trusted. And if the drive goes back under warranty, you need to know beforehand whether the manufacturer lets you keep the failed drive, something many contracts allow for precisely because of this.
The same goes for the rest: a switch, a camera or a control panel taken out of service holds passwords, addresses and sometimes the credentials for the alert email inside it. They are reset to factory values before they leave the building.
