Does the warranty cover lightning burning out my cameras?
No. No manufacturer's warranty covers damage from surges, lightning, flooding or vandalism: that is a matter for the insurance and, above all, for the protection that was fitted. The warranty covers a defect in the product, and a board burnt out by a discharge is not one.
What you can do is stop it getting there. On outdoor cameras on poles, the protection is a properly made earth at the bracket, surge protectors at the network end and at the power end, and fibre instead of copper between separate buildings. It costs little compared with replacing half a perimeter, and it is the first thing you look at when an installation loses cameras every storm.
It is also worth knowing how each brand's warranty works before you buy, because there the differences are large: how many years it covers, whether the replacement is sent out in advance or you have to send the unit off and wait, and whether it has to go back to the country of origin. Across a large estate, that weighs more in the sums than the unit price.
