How long does the backup power supply have to last?
It depends what you want it for, and they are three different decisions with three different prices. A few minutes is enough for a flicker not to show and for the server to shut down tidily. Carrying on recording through a long outage is another thing. And holding up the whole system until a generator starts is a third.
What cannot happen is not knowing. Almost every installation has a backup unit, and almost none knows how many minutes it gives with what is plugged into it today, which is never what it had on the day it was calculated.
And batteries age without saying so: a six-year-old unit gives half what it used to and keeps showing green lights right up to the day of the cut. That is why the runtime is measured with everything running, and measured again every year. It is half an hour that almost nobody spends.
