How long does it take to design a project and to build it?
It depends on three things, and none of them is the installation work. The first is how long the client takes to decide the scope, which is the one that varies most and the one nobody puts in the schedule. The second is the building work and coordination with the other trades: the cable cannot be pulled until the routes are there, and the ceilings cannot be closed until the cable is in. And the third is the supply of the equipment, which has stopped being a constant and is confirmed when quoting, not when ordering.
That is why we give the schedule in phases and with the dependencies written down: what has to be done, by the client and by the building works, for each phase to be able to start. An overall schedule with no dependencies is a number that is missed in the first month, and from then on nobody knows whose the delay is.
What does not get compressed is commissioning and testing. When the building works run late, the temptation is to cut exactly there, because it is the last thing and it does not show. It is precisely the part that cannot be cut.
