How much latency and how much packet loss can video take?

Latency is a nuisance above all for driving a PTZ camera: when the delay shows, the operator overshoots with the joystick and ends up fighting it. For recording, it barely matters. Packet loss is another matter entirely: very small losses, the kind nobody would notice while browsing, are enough for the image to start breaking up.

Each symptom has its signature. Blocks of colour or half-images that smear for a few seconds are lost packets. An image that freezes and then runs fast is a problem of buffering and pacing. Delay on the live view with the recording flawless is not the network, it is the workstation you are watching from. And clean gaps in the recording point to the path between the camera and the recorder.

The way to know without guessing is to measure between the camera and the recorder for a whole day and look at the counters on the switches along the path. A three-second ping at midday proves nothing.
