What are the PoE classes and which one does my camera need?
They are power steps that the device and the switch negotiate when it is plugged in. The first step, classic PoE, delivers of the order of fifteen watts at the port and a little less at the device, once you take off what is lost in the cable. The next, PoE+, is around thirty. And the last, PoE++, goes up to sixty or ninety depending on the type. A fixed indoor camera usually lives on the first; an outdoor PTZ dome with a heater asks for the second or the third.
The figure to look at on the camera is not the idle consumption, but the one with everything working at once: infrared on, zoom motor moving, wiper and heater. That is the number that goes into the switch calculation.
And you have to check that the switch speaks the same standard the camera asks for. A passive injector negotiates nothing: it puts voltage down the cable and trusts that the device at the other end knows what to do with it. It is fine for solving one stray point; not for building an installation.
