How often do cameras need cleaning?
It depends on what is in the air, and that sets two very different rhythms: in an office or a corridor, an annual clean along with the inspection is more than enough; outdoors with dust, salt, building work next door, traffic or spray irrigation, it takes rather more often, because the layer that builds up on the dome cannot be seen in daylight and at night it bounces the infrared back into the lens and turns the image into fog.
The dome is cleaned with water and neutral soap and a soft cloth, never dry and never with solvents or alcohol, because polycarbonate scratches with the dust you drag across it and cracks with harsh products. A scratched dome does not recover: it gets replaced, and many are sold separately.
The way to know whether it is due is the only one that never fails: compare today's image with the one taken on the day of handover, by day and by night. That is why the handover documentation includes a sheet per camera with its two images. Without that reference, the deterioration is so slow that nobody notices until the image is no longer any use.
