Where you cannot run cable, and where a sounder is not enough.
A manufacturer that also installs and maintains its own equipment, with two specialities that show in the project: voice evacuation and wireless links for buildings where a wall cannot be opened.
What it is, and what makes it different.

Almost every panel manufacturer sells through installers and never sets foot on site. This firm does both: it makes the electronics and it also designs, installs and maintains with its own organisation. For the client that has a practical consequence worth being clear about from the start: depending on how the contract is set up, you can end up with two technical contacts on the same installation.
It is not a problem, it is something to be sorted out. You sort it out by deciding beforehand who answers for what: who signs the project, who programs the panel, who does the acceptance tests and who gets called on a Saturday. Written down in the first meeting, it never comes up again. Not written down, it comes up the day there is a fault and each one looks at the other.
The rest is an addressable control panel with what it has to carry: loops with devices identified one by one, supervised lines, batteries, input and output modules to talk to the building, and networked panels when there is more than one plant room. You come across it in educational centres, care homes, public buildings, hospitals and listed buildings.
Voice evacuation, which is not a louder sounder.
It is the speciality that changes the result most, and the one that is understood worst.
A sounder says something is happening. It does not say what, or which way to get out, or whether the people on this storey have to move or stay. In a small, familiar building that is enough. In a large building, with people who do not know it —a shopping centre, a hospital, a university, a hotel— a sounder produces two reactions and neither is good: standing still waiting for somebody to say something, or leaving the way you came in, which is almost never the nearest exit.
A voice evacuation system replaces the tone with recorded messages and with the option of speaking live, and above all it splits them by zone: on the storey with the fire it says «leave now by…» and on the ones below it says «stay where you are, we will keep you informed». That stops eight storeys emptying at once down the same stairs, which is what turns an evacuation into a new problem.
What really costs is not the equipment, it is the acoustic design. You have to get the message understood in a place with echo, with machine noise or with music playing, and that depends on how many loudspeakers, where, at what power and with what delay between them. A voice system that cannot be understood is worse than a sounder, because people stop to try to decipher it. It is measured, adjusted and measured again, and that is site work, not catalogue work.
Wireless, and why it is not the cheap option.
The other speciality is devices that talk to the panel by radio instead of by cable. It exists for one very particular reason: there are buildings where opening a wall is not expensive, it is impossible. A listed building with a coffered ceiling, a church, a museum, a façade that cannot be touched. And there are others where it could be done, but the work means closing a hotel wing or a hospital floor for weeks.
What you have to know before asking for it: it is not a cheaper system, and it is not «the same thing without cables» either. Every device carries batteries and batteries get changed, which turns part of the maintenance into a new schedule. The radio link is supervised and the coverage has to be checked in the real building, with the walls it has, not on a drawing. And depending on the installation a mixed system is the right answer: cable where you can and radio only where there is no way.
What makes it reliable, and what makes it go off when it should not.
What makes it reliable is the same thing as any addressable panel: it watches itself and reports what is missing. On the voice side there is also a kind of supervision worth insisting on that many people do not know exists: the system checking on its own that the amplifiers work, that the loudspeaker lines are not cut and that there is a standby amplifier that takes over if one fails. A voice system with a faulty amplifier is silent, and nobody notices until the day it has to speak.
The false alarms are the usual ones, and in these buildings there is one more that causes a lot of trouble: the manual call point operated for no reason. In a school, a care home or a public building it happens, and the answer is not removing call points. It is choosing where they go, fitting hinged covers where they are needed, and configuring a verification that lets somebody check within seconds before the whole building is evacuated.
Who it suits, and who it does not.
It suits where there are a lot of people who do not know the building and where an evacuation has to be orderly and by zone. And it suits buildings where the cable is the problem: listed, historic, or in continuous use where a wing cannot be closed.
It does not suit if what you are after is the simplest possible thing for an industrial unit and twelve detectors: voice adds nothing there and radio is maintenance you did not need. And it does not suit if the client wants a single point of contact and is not willing to sort out beforehand who answers for what, because that is the real friction with this brand and we would rather say so.

In a building with voice evacuation the boundary is very clear: we make sure people find out and the building reacts. Detection, panel, voice evacuation public address, call points, interlocks with doors, lifts and air conditioning, integration with the access control so that the turnstiles and the barriers let people out, and the maintenance of all of that.
Anything carrying water is not ours: sprinklers, dry risers, hose reels, pressure sets and tanks are done by a licensed mechanical installer, with their calculation and their signature. Nor is the mechanical side of gas suppression, if the project has any. We say it at the start because it is half an installation and nobody should find out halfway through the works.
What we do with it.
- Sorting out the split of responsibilities from the first meeting when the manufacturer is also involved: who designs, who programs, who takes over the works and who gets called. In writing.
- The zone-by-zone evacuation plan before choosing a single loudspeaker: what happens on the storey with the fire, what happens on the ones next to it, in what order the building empties and who is allowed to speak on the microphone.
- The acoustic design and its verification on site, measuring that the message is understood in the difficult places and not only in the ground floor corridor.
- The tests with a signed certificate: every detector, every call point, the intelligibility by zone, the standby amplifier cutting in, the power cut and the alert transmission.
Who operates it once we leave.
The panel, the building's own staff. The usual: reading it, telling an alarm from a fault, silencing, resetting, isolating with a record and knowing who to call.
Voice asks for something more, and it is the thing usually forgotten: whoever is going to speak on that microphone has to have done it before there is a fire. Which button selects which zones, what is said and in what order, and how to speak over a public address system so that it is understood —slowly, short sentences, repeat—. It is half an hour of rehearsal and it changes the result completely.
And the structural side is not touched from inside: not the cause and effect matrix, not the zoning of the messages, and no adding devices without updating drawings. The maintenance follows its schedule and costs money every year, with the batteries on top wherever there is radio. It is worth knowing that before signing.
