And a battery room?

It depends on the chemistry, and the difference is a big one. A room of vented lead-acid batteries gives off hydrogen while charging, and there the main risk is not fire but an explosive atmosphere: what is needed is ventilation and hydrogen detection, which is gas detection equipment and not a fire detector. They get mentioned together because they go in the same room, but they are two installations with different standards and different maintenance.

With lithium batteries the problem is a different one: before the smoke there is gas coming off the electrolyte, and from the moment that starts to thermal runaway there is little time. What arrives in time there is very early detection —high-sensitivity aspirating detection or specific gas detection— combined with heat detection inside the cabinet itself. And you have to decide what the system does when it trips: cutting the charge is usually the most useful thing it can do.

In both cases the room is treated as an enclosure in its own right: its own compartment, its own detection, an interlock with the ventilation and a written cause and effect table. It is one of the areas where we most often find an ordinary optical detector, put there because one had to go somewhere.
