What is the point of encrypting the card if the reader cable is unencrypted?
Not much, and it is the point most often forgotten. The classic protocol between reader and controller is one-way, it is not encrypted and it is not supervised: anybody who unscrews the reader on the outside face and taps two wires captures valid credentials and then replays them, and the system knows nothing about it.
The alternative is the modern serial protocol with a secure channel, covered by UNE-EN 60839-11-5. It is two-way, it is encrypted and it is supervised, so if somebody disconnects or tampers with the reader the controller knows and can treat it as an alarm. It also allows information to be sent to the reader, which is what makes it possible to change things without going up the ladder.
In new build it goes in that way from the start and it costs no more cable. In an existing installation it depends on whether the readers support it; when they do not, replacing them using the same cable is usually the natural moment to fix it, because changing the protocol later means opening the wall again.
