Your own server or a cloud system?
The practical difference is not where the server is: it is whose job it is to keep it running and what happens when the internet connection fails. The doors open just the same in both cases, because the one that decides is the controller.
With your own server the data does not leave the building and the control is yours, and in exchange you have to size the machine, make backups, test that those backups really do restore and move up a version now and then. The backup that has never been restored is the weak point of almost every installation we come across.
With a cloud service you get rid of the machine and the updates, and in exchange you pay by the year, you depend on the connection to administer it and you have to look at two things in the contract: where the data is hosted and how you take it with you the day you change supplier. There is no answer that is good for everyone; there is an answer that depends on who is going to do that maintenance and with what means.
