What server do I need for a video system?

It is decided by the total video throughput, not by the number of cameras. A recording server mainly writes to disk and moves network traffic, so what has to be sized is how many megabits per second come in, how many go out to the people watching and whether the drives stand up to that continuous writing twenty-four hours a day.

The processing load turns up somewhere else and it surprises people: recording costs little, and what eats processor is decompressing video to show it or to analyse it. That is why a server that only records can be modest, and the workstation where a lot of images are viewed at once needs a graphics card that decompresses in hardware. Putting the power in the wrong place is the commonest sizing mistake.

And there are two details that cost dearly if they are ignored. Surveillance drives are designed for continuous writing and many streams at once, which is a different job from that of a computer drive. And the configuration and event database is better living on fast storage kept separate from the video, because that is what makes searches quick or slow.
