What is pre-recording and why does it matter?
It is the piece of video before the event that the system keeps, because the camera or the server hold the last few seconds in memory and dump them to disk when something triggers the recording. It matters because the event is almost never the start of the story: when the door alarm goes off, what you need to see is who was approaching beforehand.
Without pre-recording, an installation that records on event hands you videos that start halfway through the action, with the person already inside the field of view. With a few seconds of pre-recording you see the approach, which is the part that explains what happened and the one that usually identifies somebody, because they come towards the camera face on.
It is set per camera, and there is also post-recording, which keeps the recording going for a while after the event for the same reason. Both settings cost drive space and very little of it, and they are one of the few things in a video system where being generous is cheap.
