Can I change the cameras in phases or does it all have to be done at once?
In phases is almost always possible, and the right order is to start at the end: first the recording system and the network, then the cameras. If the cameras are changed first, you buy equipment the old recorder cannot make use of, and you end up recording a new camera with half of what it can do switched off so the old device understands it.
With the new system in place, the cameras are replaced in the order risk dictates and not convenience: first the points where today you cannot see what you need —entrances, till, loading bay—, then the ones that only need to detect. During the transition the old and the new live together on the same system, and that is normal and it works if it has been checked that the software talks to both.
The condition for the phases not to turn into a permanent patch-up is having the destination written down: what installation there is going to be at the end, what is kept and what is not, and in what order. Without that document, phase two gets decided on different criteria from phase one and you end up with three systems living side by side.
