Can the detection stop machinery, the air conditioning and the lifts?

Yes, and half the value of an addressable control panel is right there. It can stop the air conditioning that is spreading the smoke, close dampers, halt conveyors and processes, cut the gas to a kitchen, start the smoke control ventilation and send the lifts to the exit storey so they open and stay out of service. That lift behaviour has a standard of its own and is programmed by its maintenance firm with the signal we give it.

All of that comes out of a document written before anything is programmed: the cause and effect table. Which zone triggers which output, with what delay, and what changes if the trigger comes from a call point instead of a detector. Without that table what you have is modules wired according to what was agreed verbally on site.

And it gets tested in full, trigger by trigger, with people at both ends of the building. It is the only moment when you discover that the air conditioning module was wired to the wrong fan, and discovering it then costs a morning.
