How do you protect a high-risk warehouse or one with very high racking?

The problem with a warehouse is that the fire starts inside the racking and not above it. A detector on the roof of a twelve-metre industrial unit, with racking loaded to ten, warns you when the smoke has come through all the goods, which is late. That is why high-bay storage combines roof detection with detection in the racking aisles or with aspirating detection, and the layout is worked out with the warehouse full, not empty.

The other constraint is what is stored. The fire load and the way it is stored determine the intrinsic risk level under RSCIEI, and hanging off that are the compartmentation, the detection requirement and how often inspection by an inspection body is due. When the product stored changes, the calculation changes, and nobody from outside tells you.

And here water comes in, so we say it plainly: in a high-risk warehouse what puts the fire out is usually a sprinkler installation, and that one is not ours. We do the detection, the alert and the coordination with the rest of the building; the water system is designed, installed and certified by a fire suppression company. It is worth knowing when you ask for a price, because they are two contracts and two timetables.
