When do you fit a heat detector and what is a rate-of-rise detector?
The heat detector fires when the air around it reaches a fixed temperature; the rate-of-rise one fires as well when the temperature climbs quickly even though it has not yet reached that threshold. Almost every heat detector fitted today does both, and its class —the one on the data sheet in accordance with part 5 of UNE-EN 54— says what temperature it responds to and what range it can be used in.
They go where an optical one would give false alarms: kitchens, car parks, boiler rooms, loading bays, welding stations, drying rooms. And they have a price that has to be said out loud: a heat detector warns late. It detects a fire already under way, not one starting. It goes in because in that place the other one would not work, not because it is equivalent.
That is why, where heat goes in, you compensate somewhere else: more compartmentation, an optical one in the opening that smoke is going to come out of, or automatic suppression if the risk calls for it. A drawing full of heat detectors and nothing else is usually a drawing done so the system does not bother anybody, not so it detects.
