What happens if the network goes down or the server shuts off?
The doors carry on opening with whatever each controller has downloaded, and there is the nuance almost nobody asks about in time: that memory is finite.
Each controller has a limit on how many credentials fit and on how many events it stores before it starts losing the oldest. With big headcounts that forces a decision about which credentials get downloaded to which controller, and that decision is design, not a setting you adjust later. If it is not thought through, the network outage shows up as people who cannot get through a door their record never reached.
What stops working in the meantime is worth having written down before it happens: nobody can be added or removed, anything depending on the video or the HR system does not work, and everything that needs to look at several controllers at once goes down, such as global anti-passback between buildings. It is tested by really cutting the network on the day of commissioning, not by reading it on a datasheet.
